T.E.E.T.H, Tried Everything Else Try Homeopathy
by Heather Caruso B.Sc., ROHP, Homeopath
Homeopathy is a medical system that is over 200 years old and is practiced throughout the world and in hospitals in India, France, and Europe. Homeopathy is based on the principles of “like cures like”. What this means, is that in a nutshell homeopathy is made from substances that in a crude dose causes symptoms that one wants to cure. Remedies are made from a variety of substances, mainly plants and minerals and they are prepared in a way that make them very diluted and gentle. Homeopathic medicine has no side effects in a potency higher than a 6CH potency. The beauty of homeopathy is that if one takes a remedy that is not suited to them, it simply doesn’t work and there is no harm.
Single homeopathic remedies are matched to one’s unique symptoms. When matched properly the remedy stimulates the body to heal itself by recognizing this diluted remedy’s energy pattern, which awakens one’s healing mechanism. A prime example of a homeopathic medicine is “Allium Cepa”, which is prepared from red onion. As one may know when an onion is cut, the eyes and nose burn and water and there may be sneezing. This remedy is best suited to symptoms of cold or allergies. By taking this remedy it can help the symptoms of cold and allergies go away. Typically remedies are prescribed in a 30CH potency, taken 4 pellets under the tongue, in between meals, every 2 hours for an acute condition or twice daily for an ongoing chronic condition.
Interestingly, over the 17 years of homeopathy and nutrition practice, one notices what conditions are best served by homeopathic medicine. Some homeopaths believe all conditions can be treated with homeopathic medicine because it is based on a person’s unique symptoms. The theory, which is a valid one, is that when one’s unique symptom picture is addressed by finding a homeopathic remedy that matches one’s unique symptoms, strengthens the individual. However, on occasion addressing barriers to good health is a wise idea.
Our clinical practice shows that some people who have certain nutritional deficiencies improve faster when a prudent diet is adhered to and supplements or medical intervention are used. For example, if a person is a vegan or vegetarian and starts to develop tingling in their extremities, depression and low energy, it may be best to supplement with an activated B Complex and extra methylated B12 than try and find a homeopathic remedy for their condition. Another example, is that if someone has a broken arm, they would be wise to have the bone is put in place and casted in the emergency room. After that homeopathic remedies can be used to expedite healing, such as arnica for symptoms of injury or symphytum or calcarea phos to help with repair of the bone matrix. This is where traditional medicine and homeopathy can blend quite nicely.
Nutrition and homeopathy can blend too. For example, a case of a young girl who is only eating bread for breakfast, lunch and pasta for dinner who suffers from malnutrition, headaches, stomach pains and poor teeth. Ideally one would request the child to eat well but for whatever reason, she continues to eat poorly. She matches that symptoms of the remedy “calcarea phos”, for symptoms from malnutrition, weak bones and teeth, stomach and headaches in school children. This remedy can improve her symptoms of poor nutrition. In the long run, it may help her feel well enough to care to prepare proper meals.
In most instances, we find that homeopathy works better than supplements. For example, women who have heavy menstrual cycles due to hormone imbalance, fibroids or simply bad luck, may supplement with iron until the proverbial “cows come home”. If they don’t address the underlying symptoms of heavy flow, they will always need iron to boost up their anemia due to blood loss. This is where homeopathy is beautiful. It addresses the symptoms of menorrhagia (excessive flow) which is the reason for low iron stores. In shingles cases, homeopathic remedies are excellent for reducing the severity of the symptoms of the pain and outbreak. Time and time again during patient follow ups homeopaths are shown how beautifully homeopathy can work.
At the turn of the century in the United States, there were homeopathic hospitals. In the traditional medical hospitals, if they had a tough or unusual case, they would write on the file an acronym, “TEETH”, which stands for “tried everything else, try homeopathy”. Quite often homeopaths are referred unusual cases of people who have not had success with medical treatments or supplements. Some interesting cases will be highlighted showing how homeopathy can address one’s unique, strange, rare and peculiar symptoms. Please note as homeopaths we are not allowed to say “cure” of a disease or give a testimonial because each case in homeopathy is unique to a person’s symptoms. We give you information about how remedies are applied to certain symptoms to highlight the beauty of matching homeopathic remedies. For example,
Case 1, lady age 78 suffered with the symptoms of thick and sticky mucous. She followed her dentist’s and family doctor’s advice for a year, to no avail. The mucous was thick, difficult to swallow and constant. She wanted to spit it out. After carefully reviewing her symptoms the remedy Kalium Bich. 30CH was prescribed.
Case 2, child age 13, with a fussy and poor appetite was abnormally small in height and weight for his age. He tended towards stomach aches. His symptoms of feeling frail, being smaller lead to prescribe the remedy Silica 30CH along with Alfalfa Q, for aiding in absorption of nutrients.
Case 3, a lady aged 74, developed what looked like a growth of abnormal tissue on her lip. She had frequently had her lips sunburned over the years. She decided to ask about how her symptoms could be addressed homeopathically since her dermatologist appointment was a few months away. Her symptoms of her lip suited the remedy Condurango.
Case 4, a woman aged 56 came with symptoms of feeling like her skin was too tight. She felt that her lungs could not expand. She was short of breath. Her doctor diagnosed her with scleroderma. The unique symptoms of feeling “hidebound”, lungs cannot expand and dyspnea, were suited to the remedy called Croton Tig.
Homeopathy is excellent for those persistent or strange cases, that may or may not have a diagnosis but are bothersome to the patient. The best cases for homeopathy are those with clear symptoms of what makes them feel better or worse, the time of day things happen and how the symptom makes them feel, such as aching on walking, coughing in the morning, irritability with pain, vertigo during hunger. This 200 year old healing art, lives on and thank goodness for it! Without it, I feel that my own family would not be healthy at all.
